The first flag that told you to run.
Emanuel Wynn was a French pirate operating in the Atlantic around 1700 — and by most historical accounts, the first pirate to fly the Jolly Roger. Captain John Cranby of HMS Poole described Wynn's flag in a British Admiralty report dated July 18, 1700, as "a sable ensign with cross bones, a death's head, and an hour glass." The skull and crossbones said death. The hourglass underneath said you're running out of time to surrender. Within fifteen years, every major pirate in the Atlantic was flying some version of the design Wynn flew first. The original needs no introduction.
