Henry Every

Henry Every. The pirate who pulled off the greatest heist in history and disappeared.

In September 1695, Henry Every captured the Ganj-i-Sawai — a Mughal treasure ship returning from Mecca, carrying gold and jewels worth somewhere between £200,000 and £600,000 in contemporary money. The aftermath nearly broke East India Company relations with the Mughal Empire. Every became the most wanted pirate in the world, the subject of the first international manhunt in history. He was never caught. The trail went cold somewhere in the Bahamas or Ireland. Three centuries later, nobody knows what happened to him. Called King of the Pirates.
