A name that survived the records that didn't.

There was, in November 1718, a Black man named Caesar aboard Blackbeard's sloop Adventure when the Royal Navy boarded it at Ocracoke. The elaborate legend that grew around him — African chieftain, Florida Keys pirate base — is mostly invention. But the larger truth is real: somewhere between a quarter and a third of Golden Age pirates were Black, many of them men who had escaped slavery and found, on a pirate deck, the closest thing the Atlantic world offered to equal footing. Caesar belongs to that bigger story.
