The face that built the legend.
This is the woodcut from Captain Charles Johnson's 1724 General History of the Pyrates — the book that, fact and fiction blended together, gave the world most of what it thinks it knows about Golden Age piracy. Teach stood somewhere over six feet tall in an era when most men topped out at five-six. The beard ran from just below his eyes down to his waist and got braided into ribbons before a fight. He'd tuck slow-burning fuses under the brim of his hat so smoke wreathed his head as he boarded. It was theater designed to make ships surrender without firing a shot, and it worked. The performance was the strategy.
