Blackbeard cultivated terror as a tool. Lit fuses tucked into his beard before battle. Six pistols across his chest. The flag — horned skeleton, spear in hand, piercing a bleeding heart — was designed to win the fight before a shot was fired. He blockaded Charleston in 1718 and held the city hostage for medical supplies. He died at Ocracoke Inlet that November with five pistol wounds and twenty cuts.
