The man who drew the map everyone else followed.

Thomas Tew — the Rhode Island Pirate — pioneered the route that became known as the Pirate Round: out of Newport or Bermuda, around the Cape of Good Hope, and up to the Red Sea to ambush Mughal treasure ships. His first voyage in 1692 made him rich enough to retire. He didn't. On his second voyage in September 1695, he joined Henry Every's flotilla and attacked the Mughal ship Fateh Muhammed. A cannon shot killed him on the deck. His crew surrendered immediately. His flag — a white arm holding a sword on black — said everything he intended: we are ready. Tew died at the entrance to the fortune he'd been chasing. Every, sailing right behind him, took the biggest prize in pirate history.
