Hanging is no great hardship.
Mary Read was born around 1685 in England. Her mother raised her as a boy. She served in the British army, married a fellow soldier, was widowed, and ended up on a ship captured by Calico Jack's crew. She fought alongside Anne Bonny — the only two on deck while the men hid below. At trial, when asked if she feared the gallows, she reportedly said hanging was no great hardship — for were it not for that, every cowardly fellow would turn pirate.
